Disc Injury

A scan report or the words “disc injury” can make ordinary movement feel uncertain. Before you decide that your back is permanently damaged, or that you need a particular treatment, it helps to separate the label from the next decision.

Some symptoms need emergency care. If back or neck pain comes with loss of feeling or movement in your limbs, or problems controlling your bladder or bowels, call 000. Do not wait for an online booking or try an exercise from a video. Healthdirect’s spinal-disc guidance explains these warning signs.

What is a disc problem?

Discs sit between the bones of your spine. A disc can bulge, tear or rupture, and nearby nerves may become irritated or compressed. Symptoms can include pain, numbness or weakness. But back pain has several possible causes, so a description online cannot establish your diagnosis.

Many spinal-disc problems improve without surgery. That is a reason to discuss your options, not a guarantee that every problem will settle by itself. New, worsening or worrying symptoms need medical assessment.

Start with the tasks you want to get back to

“Fix my disc” is an understandable wish. “Sit through a work meeting”, “walk to the shops” or “pick up my child” tells your clinician something more practical about what matters to you.

Write down when symptoms started, where you feel them, what has changed and what you have already tried. Bring reports you already have. Ask how those findings relate to your symptoms and whether further medical review is needed.

Questions to ask before choosing a treatment plan

  • What explains my symptoms, and what remains uncertain?
  • Which movements or activities are appropriate for me now?
  • What should make me stop and seek medical help?
  • What is each proposed treatment intended to achieve?
  • When will we review progress and reconsider the plan?
  • What are the fees for any later appointments?

A useful discussion should leave room for your concerns and alternatives. An online video can introduce a topic, but it cannot examine you or choose an exercise programme for your individual situation.

When physiotherapy may be the next step

If you have been advised that physiotherapy is appropriate, our initial physiotherapy assessment is free, in person or by telehealth. Choose Runcorn, Southport or a telehealth appointment in the calendar. Other services and later treatment may have different fees, and booking terms apply.

You are booking an initial assessment, not a promise that a disc can be “put back”, a guaranteed treatment result or a fixed recovery deadline. You can ask about suitability before choosing an appointment by calling 1300 833 866.
