Vestibular Migraine and Physio: Where an Assessment Fits

Dizziness can be more disruptive than a headache. If you have heard the term vestibular migraine, you may be wondering whether a vestibular physiotherapy appointment is useful—or whether a different assessment should come first.

Start with a medical diagnosis if the cause of your symptoms is unclear. Enhanced Physio offers vestibular physiotherapy at Runcorn and Southport, but a routine booking does not establish that dizziness is caused by migraine.

Similar symptoms can need different care

Vestibular migraine can involve dizziness, vertigo and balance problems, sometimes without a prominent headache. Other conditions, including BPPV and Ménière’s disease, can cause overlapping symptoms. This is why the diagnosis matters. Migraine Australia explains these differences.

A treatment you saw recommended for one type of vertigo may not be appropriate for another. Avoid treating an online symptom match as a diagnosis or repeatedly trying a manoeuvre simply because it helped someone else.

Where vestibular physiotherapy may fit

Vestibular physiotherapists can form part of a wider migraine care team. Medical management may still involve a GP or relevant specialist. Physiotherapy does not replace medication advice or the investigation of new symptoms. See Migraine Australia’s care-team guidance.

For your appointment, describe how symptoms affect walking, turning, travel, work or other daily activities. Ask what can be assessed, whether rehabilitation is appropriate and how any proposed exercises would be progressed and reviewed. There is no single exercise programme or recovery timetable that fits everyone.

Bring a useful symptom history

  • When symptoms began and whether their pattern has changed.
  • How long episodes last and what you notice around them.
  • Any existing diagnosis, investigations or referral.
  • Medicines and advice from your treating doctor.
  • The activities you most want help managing.

If dizziness comes with facial or limb weakness, difficulty speaking, chest pain, breathing difficulty or loss of consciousness, call 000. Sudden, severe or repeatedly unexplained dizziness also needs medical advice. Read Healthdirect’s advice on when to seek help.

Arrange a vestibular assessment

For an appropriate non-urgent assessment, use the ordinary initial physiotherapy appointment at your preferred clinic and mention vestibular symptoms when booking. View our vestibular physiotherapy service or call 1300 833 866. The initial physiotherapy assessment is free; later treatment may have different fees.
