Mealtimes can become difficult long before you know whether to call the problem “fussy eating”. You may be worried about a very small range of foods, a medical restriction or whether your child is getting what they need. You do not need the perfect label before asking for help.
Enhanced Physio offers dietetics enquiries for children at Runcorn and Southport. Call with your child’s age and the main concern so reception can arrange the appropriate dietetics appointment. Dietetics is a separate service from the free initial physiotherapy assessment.
When a conversation may be useful
Food preferences can vary as children grow. A very restricted range of foods, persistent exclusion of food groups or concerns about growth deserve an individual discussion. A GP, child health nurse or dietitian can help decide what assessment is appropriate. Read the Raising Children Network’s guidance on fussy eating.
You can also ask about nutrition when a diagnosed allergy, intolerance or other condition makes eating more complicated. Avoid starting additional food restrictions simply because another family’s plan appeared to help them.
Bring a picture of ordinary mealtimes
Describe a typical day, including foods your child accepts, drinks, school or childcare arrangements and what happens when a meal becomes difficult. Bring relevant medical information, growth records if available, allergies and any supplements already being used.
This is not a test of your parenting or a requirement to record every mouthful. A useful first conversation helps explain the circumstances around food, including the preferences and practical limits your family is working with.
Ask what the plan would change
- What is the main nutrition concern to address first?
- Are medical checks or another professional’s input needed?
- What changes are realistic at home and at school?
- How will progress be reviewed without turning every meal into a test?
- What are the appointment and follow-up fees?
If your child has difficulty swallowing, repeated choking, significant weight loss or is unwell, contact their doctor promptly. A routine nutrition booking is not a substitute for medical assessment.
