A painful shoulder can make getting dressed, reaching a shelf or sleeping on your side difficult. Search results may call it bursitis, impingement, a rotator cuff problem or frozen shoulder. Those names are not interchangeable, and the task that hurts does not establish a diagnosis.
When to get medical help first
Call 000 for shoulder pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating or dizziness. Seek urgent medical care after a serious injury or for severe swelling, a changed shape, loss of movement, or a hot, red shoulder with fever. MedlinePlus explains important shoulder warning signs.
Start with how the problem behaves
Shoulder pain can involve tendons, joints, injury or pain referred from elsewhere. Treatment depends on the cause. A history and examination help decide what needs investigation and whether physiotherapy is appropriate.
Tell the clinician whether pain began suddenly or gradually, which directions are difficult, whether strength has changed and whether symptoms travel down the arm. Mention previous surgery or a dislocation.
A useful plan should connect to your goal
Being able to lift a shopping bag and returning to overhead sport are different goals. Explain which matters to you first. Ask what the assessment found, what remains uncertain and how each proposed exercise or activity change relates to that task.
If you have a scan report, bring it. Ask the clinician to explain it alongside your symptoms and examination rather than assuming a word on the report explains everything.
