When a headache interrupts your work or keeps returning, it is tempting to search for the one stretch that will stop it. The more useful first question is whether physiotherapy is the right kind of help for this headache.
Do not book routine physiotherapy for an emergency. Call 000 for a sudden, severe headache, or a headache with vomiting, confusion, neck stiffness or changes in vision. A new headache after a head injury, or one that is getting worse, also needs prompt medical assessment. See Healthdirect’s headache guidance.
Why the cause matters
Headaches have different causes and treatments. Migraine, tension-type headache and other conditions cannot be distinguished reliably from a short article or exercise video. Having neck discomfort at the same time does not by itself establish the cause.
See your doctor if headaches interfere with daily life, change in pattern or become more severe. If you frequently need pain medicine, mention that too. A diary of symptoms, timing, possible triggers and medicines can help the discussion.
Where does physiotherapy fit?
If a clinician has suggested that neck movement or a musculoskeletal problem may be contributing, a physiotherapy assessment can be a next step to discuss. It should fit into your care, rather than replace a medical assessment when one is needed.
Before booking, ask whether the practitioner sees people with your concern. At the appointment, explain what you want help deciding. That might be how to manage work tasks, whether an exercise is suitable, or when to return to your doctor.
Bring better questions, not a self-diagnosis
- Does this pattern need a medical review before physiotherapy?
- What would make a neck-related explanation more or less likely?
- What is the purpose of any suggested exercise?
- What should I do if symptoms change?
- How will we assess whether the proposed approach is helping?
- What would later appointments or treatment cost?
You can bring your symptom diary and any advice or reports you already have. There is no need to turn your experience into medical terminology. Clear examples of what happens and when are more useful than selecting a diagnosis from a search result.
The next step at Enhanced Physio
For an appropriate, non-urgent physiotherapy concern, the initial physiotherapy assessment is free in person or by telehealth. Runcorn, Southport and telehealth options are shown in the booking calendar. Other services and later treatment may have different fees; booking terms apply.
The appointment is an assessment, not a guarantee that physiotherapy will resolve your headaches. If you are unsure which appointment to choose, call 1300 833 866. For urgent symptoms, follow the medical-care advice above.
