Sports Nutrition: Planning Food Around Your Activity

Training around work and family can make food planning an afterthought. You may be unsure what to eat before an early session, how to recover between activities or whether you need a supplement at all.

Start with the demands of your activity and your normal meals, rather than a product list.

Food and fluid need to fit the session

Nutrition around exercise depends on the type, duration and intensity of activity, the time available and what you tolerate. A balanced eating pattern and suitable food and fluid around activity support participation and recovery. Get Active Victoria offers practical meal and snack examples.

An approach that fits one athlete may not fit another. Medical conditions, digestive symptoms, allergies and multiple training sessions can make the planning more specific.

Bring your real week to the conversation

Note when you train, when you can eat, the equipment or food storage you have and how sessions feel. Mention fatigue, digestive problems, injury recovery or any concern about meeting your needs. Persistent unexplained symptoms also deserve medical assessment.

If you compete under anti-doping rules, say so before discussing supplements. Ask about the evidence, risks and suitability of any product instead of assuming “sports” on a label means it is necessary or appropriate.

Match the practitioner to your needs

A dietitian and an Accredited Sports Dietitian are not interchangeable titles. Ask about relevant experience and whether a specialist referral would be better for your sport or level. Enhanced Physio’s general dietetics service should not be taken as a claim that every practitioner holds a sports-dietetics credential.

What should you leave with?

Ask for practical options for your training times, a way to judge whether the plan is working and clear follow-up arrangements. Explain your budget and food preferences. An effective discussion should make everyday decisions clearer, not leave you dependent on a complicated shopping list or a promised performance gain.

Discuss the right dietetics appointment

Dietetics is available at Enhanced Physio Runcorn and Southport. Call 1300 833 866 with your reason for seeking help so we can confirm the practitioner’s experience, appointment type and fees. View dietetics and booking options. Choose dietetics rather than a physiotherapy assessment; later appointments and reports may have separate fees.
