Posture and Pain: Do You Need to Sit Perfectly?

Have you caught yourself in a photo and wondered whether rounded shoulders explain your pain? Or spent a workday trying to sit “perfectly”, only to feel stiff anyway? Posture advice often makes a complicated problem sound like a single position to correct.

There is no single perfect posture

Bodies vary, and a posture that looks different is not automatically a problem. Evidence does not establish one ideal sitting or standing position that prevents pain for everyone. The Arthritis Movement discusses these common posture assumptions.

That does not mean your comfort is irrelevant. It means a photograph alone cannot diagnose why you hurt or tell you that your body needs reshaping.

Replace “am I sitting wrong?” with a more useful question

Ask which tasks or periods of stillness are uncomfortable, how your symptoms change and what helps. Can you vary position? Is equipment forcing an awkward reach? Are workload or breaks making the day harder to manage?

Try describing the situation in concrete terms: “I become uncomfortable after a long video call” is easier to investigate than “I have terrible posture”.

Before paying for a posture correction

Ask what problem the proposed treatment is intended to address, what evidence supports it and how improvement will be judged. Be cautious about guaranteed structural changes or predictions of future damage based only on appearance.

If your goal is comfort, work or exercise, make that the measure you discuss. You do not need to adopt an unfamiliar ideal silhouette as your goal.

When an assessment may help

Persistent pain, restricted movement or symptoms interfering with daily life deserve assessment. New weakness, numbness, significant injury or other concerning symptoms need medical advice rather than being attributed to posture.

At your visit, explain what you have already tried, including braces, chairs or exercise routines, and what response you noticed. Ask for a practical next step that fits your day.
