You want to move more comfortably or build strength, but the booking menu offers both physiotherapy and exercise physiology. Choosing the closest-sounding name can leave you unsure whether you have booked the help you need.
These professions overlap, particularly around exercise and rehabilitation. The distinction is the assessment, scope and focus of the individual appointment—not a rule that one is for injured people and the other is only for healthy gym-goers.
The main difference to understand
Physiotherapists assess and manage a range of conditions affecting movement and function, using exercise and other approaches as appropriate. Exercise physiologists use exercise interventions for health conditions, injury management and longer-term activity goals. Exercise & Sports Science Australia explains the professions’ different areas of expertise.
Physiotherapy can be relevant when you need assessment of a new pain or movement problem. Exercise physiology can be relevant when you need a structured exercise programme around your health and goals. These are starting points for a discussion, not a diagnosis or an automatic referral.
Describe the task before choosing the title
Compare these two requests: “My shoulder suddenly became weak after a fall” and “My doctor has advised me to exercise, but I need help adapting it to my health condition”. The first may need prompt medical assessment; the second calls for a discussion about appropriate exercise support. Selecting a service because it has an earlier appointment is not enough.
When contacting reception, explain what has changed, any diagnosis or medical advice you have received, and what you want to be able to do. Ask which practitioner and appointment type fit that request.
What to confirm before you book
- Does this practitioner work with my concern and any relevant health condition?
- Is the appointment an assessment, a treatment session or supervised exercise?
- Should I bring a referral, medical clearance or existing rehabilitation instructions?
- What is included, and what would later appointments cost?
- How will progress be measured and the programme adjusted?
If you already have a treating clinician, share their advice. The next appointment should support a coherent plan rather than give you conflicting exercise instructions.
