Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Understanding Your Care Options

A feeling of vaginal heaviness or a bulge can bring immediate worries about exercise, sex and whether surgery is inevitable. Those concerns deserve a clear discussion with a clinician, not a diagnosis made from a picture online.

What pelvic organ prolapse means

Prolapse occurs when the support of pelvic organs changes and an organ presses into the vagina. Symptoms can include heaviness, a bulge or difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel. Symptoms may vary during the day. A GP or pelvic-health clinician can assess what is happening.

Management can include pelvic floor care, changes to bowel habits or activities, a support device such as a pessary, and sometimes surgery. The appropriate option depends on assessment and your preferences. Continence Health Australia explains prolapse and management options.

Bring the question you most want answered

Perhaps you want to keep running, lift your child, work comfortably or understand a recent diagnosis. Say that at the start. Ask how your symptoms and goals affect the options, rather than assuming everyone with prolapse needs the same restrictions.

If you have already seen a doctor, bring the findings and any advice about exercise, a pessary or surgery. Physiotherapy should be coordinated with that care.

Discuss the assessment before it happens

You can ask why an examination is proposed, what it would involve and what alternatives exist. Tell the practitioner about your preferences and any concerns. You can decline or stop an examination.

Ask how the plan will be reviewed: what change are you hoping for, which activities will you monitor, and when should you contact the treating team? New inability to pass urine or sudden severe symptoms need urgent medical advice.
