Balance and Mobility: Finding the Right Support

Holding a rail more often, avoiding an uneven path or feeling less confident getting up from a chair can quietly change your day. You may be wondering whether this is simply something to accept, or whether there is a practical way to work on it.

Start by understanding the change

Falls and unsteadiness can involve strength and balance, vision, medicines, health conditions and the environment. Speak with your doctor after a fall, even if you feel well. Exercise that improves balance and movement can be part of a falls-prevention plan, but it should fit your ability and health needs. Healthdirect explains the different factors.

Sudden unexplained unsteadiness, fainting, new weakness or other acute symptoms need medical assessment; do not treat them as a routine exercise problem. Call 000 for a medical emergency.

Choose the activity that matters to you

Your first goal might be walking to the letterbox, using the shower more confidently or visiting friends. Describe the task and what currently feels difficult. Tell the clinician about recent falls, near-falls, dizziness and any walking aid you use.

Bring your medicine list and relevant medical advice. A family member or support person can help recall changes if you would like them involved.

Ask how to practise safely

Before starting balance exercises, ask what support or supervision is appropriate. An online demonstration does not show whether the exercise is suitable for you or whether your space is safe.

Discuss how progress will be checked, which symptoms need review and whether other professionals should be involved. Ask about home hazards and equipment rather than purchasing an aid without advice.

Make the booking match your needs

Call ahead if you need help with access, a particular appointment format or support-person attendance. A clinic appointment does not imply that a home visit is available. We can clarify the appointment before you make travel arrangements.

Book an assessment for your next step
