A knee injury during a turn, landing or sudden stop can leave you asking two urgent questions: “Have I torn my ACL?” and “Will I need surgery?” An online test cannot settle either question. The first step is an appropriate injury assessment; the next is a plan that considers your knee and the activities you want back.
Suspected injury: get it assessed
The ACL is one of the ligaments contributing to knee stability. Injuries can occur during pivoting, sudden slowing or landing. A clinician assesses the knee and may arrange imaging. If the knee is deformed, severely swollen, or you cannot bear weight, seek urgent medical assessment rather than continuing sport.
A confirmed tear does not produce one automatic plan
Treatment decisions consider instability, the tear and any associated injuries, your activity demands and personal circumstances. Options may involve rehabilitation with or without reconstruction surgery. Decisions should involve a practitioner experienced in ACL care. Sports Medicine Australia explains the treatment considerations.
Discuss the whole rehabilitation commitment
Ask what the early stage involves, what restrictions apply and who will coordinate care. If surgery is being considered, ask about the alternatives, expected demands of rehabilitation and practical effects on work and home life.
Later progress needs more than a quieter knee. Ask how strength, movement, confidence and the demands of your sport will be assessed before returning. Do not use this article or a fixed online timetable as clearance to play.
What to bring to your first rehabilitation discussion
- Your injury date, diagnosis and relevant imaging reports.
- Any surgeon or sports doctor’s instructions.
- Your sport, position, work demands and priorities.
- Any brace, weight-bearing restrictions or current programme.
Tell reception you are asking about ACL rehabilitation so the appropriate appointment and clinician can be confirmed. Bring the treating team’s plan; advice should be coordinated around it.
