Dizzy When You Stand Up? Start With the Cause

Feeling lightheaded when you stand up is not the same thing as knowing you have an inner-ear problem. Before choosing exercises or a vestibular appointment, it is important to establish what may be causing the symptom.

When to seek help now

If dizziness occurs with chest pain, trouble breathing, facial or limb weakness, difficulty speaking or loss of consciousness, call 000. Seek medical advice for sudden, severe or recurring unexplained dizziness. Healthdirect lists the symptoms that need urgent attention.

A change in position is a clue, not a diagnosis

A drop in blood pressure when standing is one possible explanation. Dehydration, medicines and other health conditions can also be relevant. A doctor can assess the pattern and decide whether tests or treatment are needed. Do not stop or alter medicines on your own. Read about low blood pressure and postural symptoms.

Descriptions such as spinning, feeling faint or feeling unsteady can help the clinician understand your experience. They do not reliably identify the cause by themselves. Explain what actually happens rather than trying to fit it into a label you found online.

Prepare for the medical conversation

  • Does it happen after lying down, sitting or standing for a while?
  • How long does it last, and have you fainted or fallen?
  • Are there other symptoms at the same time?
  • Have medicines, illness or daily routines changed?
  • Is it becoming more frequent or affecting safe movement?

You do not need to provoke another episode to answer these questions. If you feel faint, stop the activity and get into a safe position. Avoid driving or operating equipment while dizzy. See Healthdirect’s practical dizziness advice.

Where physiotherapy may come later

If medical assessment identifies a role for balance, mobility or vestibular rehabilitation, physiotherapy may form part of the plan. Bring the relevant findings or referral so the assessment addresses the right problem. A general promise of “vertigo treatment” is not enough to decide that this is the appropriate first service.

Enhanced Physio offers vestibular physiotherapy at Runcorn and Southport. For a non-urgent question about arranging care after medical advice, call 1300 833 866. If the cause is unexplained, contact your doctor first.
