Paediatric Physiotherapy: Choosing the Next Step for Your Child

When you notice a change in how your child moves, it can be hard to decide whether to wait, ask your GP or book a physiotherapy assessment. Start with the concern you have noticed. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or an exercise programme.

Enhanced Physio accepts paediatric physiotherapy enquiries at Runcorn and Southport. Call with your child’s age and the reason for the appointment so we can arrange an appropriate practitioner and appointment. A general online booking should not be taken as confirmation that every clinician sees every age or condition.

What paediatric physiotherapy focuses on

Paediatric physiotherapy concerns movement and physical function in children. An assessment takes account of the child’s development and daily activities, rather than treating them as a smaller adult. The Royal Children’s Hospital describes the role of paediatric physiotherapy.

The discussion might begin with walking, running, play, participation at school or recovery after an injury. Ask what the assessment can help clarify and whether your child’s GP or another clinician should be involved. An appointment should not come with a promise to reach a milestone by a fixed date.

Bring examples of what you have noticed

Useful details include when the concern began, whether it is changing and which activities are affected. If you already have relevant reports, a referral or instructions after an injury, bring them. You can write down questions in advance, especially if you are worried you will forget them during the visit.

Tell reception about communication, sensory or access needs that may affect the appointment. Ask whether a parent or carer should attend and what clothing or footwear would be helpful. There is no need to coach your child to perform a particular movement beforehand.

Make the plan workable for your family

  • What is the main goal we are working towards?
  • What, if anything, should we practise between visits?
  • How will we know whether the plan is helping?
  • When should we return to the GP or seek another opinion?
  • What will any follow-up appointments cost?

If a child is acutely unwell, has a significant injury or suddenly loses a previously established ability, seek prompt medical advice rather than waiting for a routine therapy appointment.
