Shoulder Bursitis: Understanding Your Treatment Options

If a report or clinician has mentioned shoulder bursitis, you may be wondering whether you should stop moving the arm, have an injection or start exercises. The name is a starting point for discussion, not a complete treatment plan.

What is shoulder bursitis?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled structure that reduces friction around moving tissues. Bursitis means it is irritated or inflamed. At the shoulder, subacromial bursitis may cause pain when lifting the arm. Pain, tenderness and restricted movement can occur, but similar symptoms can have other causes.

Treatment may involve adjusting aggravating activity, appropriate movement, physiotherapy or medical treatment. Injections and surgery are options in selected circumstances, not automatic requirements. Healthdirect explains bursitis and its treatment options.

Check for symptoms needing medical care

A hot, red shoulder with fever, a serious injury or sudden major loss of movement needs urgent medical assessment. Call 000 for shoulder pain with chest pressure or breathlessness. Do not assume a previous bursitis diagnosis explains every new symptom.

Ask how the finding fits your symptoms

Bring the report if you have one. Explain which tasks hurt, when the problem began and whether strength or sleep has changed. Ask whether the clinical findings support the diagnosis and whether anything else needs investigation.

If an injection is proposed, discuss the possible benefits, risks, alternatives and what would happen afterwards with the treating clinician. This page cannot tell you whether an injection is appropriate for you.

Build a plan around daily use of your arm

Ask how to manage work, dressing, carrying and sleep while following the treatment plan. If exercises are proposed, ask for the amount, the expected response and the point at which you should seek review.

The useful outcome is being able to do the activities that matter to you. Agree how that will be assessed rather than relying only on a label or a promised recovery time.
