If past food plans have been hard to maintain, another strict menu may not be the first thing you need. A useful appointment should explore your health, your goals and what makes everyday eating difficult, without treating body size as a measure of effort or character.
Choose the kind of support you want
You might want more regular meals, advice around a medical condition, support with weight management or a better understanding of nutrition. Say which matters to you. You can discuss goals beyond the number on a scale and ask how progress will be evaluated.
Better Health Channel recommends checking provider qualifications and choosing a balanced approach, with realistic expectations and clear costs. Read its guide to weight-management services.
Explain what previous plans missed
Perhaps shift work disrupts meal times, shopping is expensive, or a restrictive plan left you hungry and preoccupied with food. Those details belong in the consultation. A recommendation needs to account for culture, preferences, access to food and other health care.
If you have a history of an eating disorder, distress around eating or rapid unexplained weight change, tell your GP and the practitioner so appropriate support can be arranged. Do not assume a general weight-management appointment is the right service for every concern.
Ask these questions before committing
- What qualifications and relevant experience do you have?
- How will the plan fit my health needs and daily routine?
- What would follow-up involve and what would it cost?
- Will I be expected to buy products or supplements?
- How will we review progress and adjust the plan?
A guaranteed weight-loss figure or deadline does not account for individual circumstances. Ask for the reasoning behind recommendations and for time to consider them.
Prepare for a constructive conversation
Bring relevant medical advice, a medicine list and a brief description of a typical day. You do not need to change your eating or reach a target weight before asking for support.
Discuss the right dietetics appointment
Dietetics is available at Enhanced Physio Runcorn and Southport. Call 1300 833 866 with your reason for seeking help so we can confirm the practitioner’s experience, appointment type and fees. View dietetics and booking options. Choose dietetics rather than a physiotherapy assessment; later appointments and reports may have separate fees.
