Does your knee hurt on stairs, after a run, when kneeling or when getting up from a chair? Those details matter. “Knee pain” describes the problem you feel; it does not tell you whether the cause is an injury, arthritis or another condition.
A useful next step starts with what happened and what your knee can currently do.
Check whether you need urgent care
Seek urgent medical care for a badly swollen or misshapen knee, a serious injury, or a hot, red knee with fever. Arrange prompt assessment if you cannot bear weight, your knee locks or gives way, or pain is severe. Healthdirect’s knee-pain guide explains when to seek help.
Separate a new injury from an ongoing problem
After a twist or fall, the assessment may need to consider injury to bone, ligaments or other structures. Gradual pain has a different history. Examination and, where indicated, investigations help guide treatment; the location of pain alone cannot identify the cause.
For a known diagnosis such as osteoarthritis, the question may be how to manage activity and function. For a new injury, it may be whether medical investigation is needed before rehabilitation.
What to record before your visit
- When symptoms started and whether there was an injury.
- Which tasks provoke them, including stairs, walking, kneeling or sport.
- Swelling, locking, giving way or changes in movement.
- What you have tried and what happened afterwards.
- Your most important activity goal.
You do not need a perfect diary. A few clear examples help the clinician understand your situation.
Ask how the plan will be adjusted
If exercise is recommended, ask how to fit it around work or training, what amount to begin with, and what to do if symptoms change. Ask which milestones will guide progression rather than relying on a promised recovery date.
If you have already been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, our knee osteoarthritis article explains the questions to discuss about movement and ongoing care. A general knee assessment is the better starting point when the cause is unclear.
