Sciatica: Symptoms, Assessment and Exercise Questions

Pain running from your back or buttock into a leg can be unsettling, especially when sitting, walking and sleeping all seem to bring different advice. Searching “sciatica exercises” may produce dozens of movements without explaining which, if any, fit your symptoms.

Start by understanding the symptom pattern and checking whether you need urgent help.

Symptoms that need urgent assessment

Go to an emergency department immediately if you develop difficulty controlling or passing urine, loss of bowel control, numbness around your genitals or bottom, or new severe or worsening leg weakness. Do not wait for an exercise appointment. Read Healthdirect’s sciatica guidance.

What sciatica describes

Sciatica describes symptoms associated with irritation or pressure affecting the sciatic nerve pathway, often from the lower back. Pain may travel down one leg and may occur with tingling, numbness or weakness. A disc problem is one possible cause, but a description online cannot establish your diagnosis.

Treatment depends on the findings and can include activity advice, physiotherapy, medicines or other medical care. A clinician decides whether investigations are needed. A scan is not something you need to organise automatically before asking for help.

Why an exercise list may not answer your question

The useful question is not just “which stretch?” It is “what can I do with my current symptoms, and how will I know whether it is appropriate?” Tell the clinician where symptoms travel, how long you can sit or walk, and whether strength or sensation has changed.

Ask for an explanation of the proposed movement, the amount to try and the response that should make you stop or seek review. Do not push through increasing neurological symptoms because an online routine says to complete a fixed number.

Plan around the task you need back

For a driver, sitting tolerance may be the immediate concern. For someone on their feet all day, it may be walking or standing. Bring that priority to your assessment and ask how any activity changes can fit your working day. If you already have a doctor’s plan, bring it so your care can be coordinated.
