You have a referral, a Medicare card and a physiotherapy appointment in mind. It is reasonable to want one clear answer before you book: what will you actually pay?
The answer depends on the referral, your eligibility, services already used and the clinic’s fee. A Medicare rebate and a free clinic offer are different arrangements. Checking them separately helps avoid a surprise.
When Medicare may contribute
Under a GP chronic condition management plan, eligible patients may access Medicare benefits for individual allied health services consistent with their plan. The usual annual allowance is up to five individual services shared across eligible professions; eligible Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander patients may access up to ten. These are not automatically five physiotherapy visits plus five visits to every other provider.
Your GP decides whether a referral is appropriate. Referral validity also matters: if no period is specified, a GP chronic condition management plan referral is generally valid for 18 months from the first service under it. Earlier GP management plans and team care arrangements have transition rules. Check the current Services Australia guidance.
A rebate does not tell you the final fee
Before booking a Medicare-related appointment, ask reception to confirm the fee, expected rebate and any gap for that appointment. Also ask whether the particular practitioner and service meet the requirements. Do not assume that a referral makes every visit free or that unused visits carry forward.
If you have seen another allied health provider this year, mention that when eligibility is checked. Bring the referral rather than relying on a remembered description such as “EPC” or “care plan”.
What about Enhanced Physio’s free assessment?
Our initial physiotherapy assessment is free in person at Runcorn or Southport, or by telehealth. Later treatment and other services may have different fees. This offer is separate from assuming Medicare eligibility; a free assessment should not be treated as a promise that ongoing care is free.
If you want an appointment specifically under your GP’s referral, contact us first so the appointment type and billing arrangement can be checked. Do not choose a general booking option and assume it has been matched to your referral.
Four details to settle before the appointment
- Is the referral current and appropriate for this service?
- How many eligible services remain available to me?
- What is the clinic fee, what rebate may apply, and what would I pay?
- What would any later appointments or reports cost?
Bring your referral, relevant care-plan information and Medicare details to the appointment. If something is unclear, ask reception before proceeding; the aim is to make the next step understandable, not to guess your entitlement.
