Achilles Tendinopathy: When Your Heel Says “Enough!”

Your heel may feel stiff on the first walk of the day, or pain may return when you increase running. Before choosing a stretch or taking a long break from activity, the important first step is to understand what is causing the pain.

A sudden injury needs a different response

A sudden pop or a feeling of being struck behind the ankle, followed by difficulty pushing off or walking, can indicate an Achilles rupture. Seek urgent medical assessment. Do not treat that as routine tendon soreness or test it with exercises from an article. Cambridge University Hospitals explains the signs of a rupture.

What is Achilles tendinopathy?

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel. Tendinopathy can cause pain and stiffness around the tendon, often associated with activity. It is different from a sudden rupture, and other conditions can also cause heel pain.

Assessment, changes to aggravating activity and an appropriate strengthening programme may form part of care. The right approach depends on the problem and the person; recovery can take time. Healthdirect’s Achilles-tendon guide explains the different injuries and treatment options.

Bring the story behind your symptoms

Has your walking, training, work or footwear changed? Does the pain occur at the start of activity, later, or the next morning? Is it affecting stairs, work shifts or a return to sport?

These details make the discussion more useful than arriving with a list of treatments to request. You can also bring a recent training schedule or write down the changes you remember. Your goal may be a comfortable daily walk rather than a race; both deserve a plan that fits.

Questions before you start rehabilitation

  • What is the working diagnosis, and is further assessment needed?
  • Which activities can I continue or adapt?
  • How will the amount of exercise be chosen and progressed?
  • What response means I should contact the clinician?
  • What will we review before increasing walking or running?
  • What would later appointments cost?

Do not choose a treatment because an article promises a particular percentage reduction in pain. Ask what evidence supports it for your circumstances, what the limitations are and whether alternatives are appropriate.
